Fire officials said that for the first time since the wildfire emergency began eight days ago in Southern California, there has been no significant growth in the fires. As winds diminished, more progress was reported in containing the two biggest fires. Displaced families began sending their children back to school, with some attending new schools because of fire damage. NBC News' Morgan Chesky reports. After more than 15 months of war, Israel and Hamas have agreed to a deal to end the fighting in Gaza, free almost 100 hostages still held by Hamas and hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in Israel. President Biden said the agreement will take effect on Sunday and would be carried out in three phases, with Hamas releasing 33 hostages in the first phase. NBC News' Richard Engel reports on the agreement and reaction in Israel and Gaza. A Southwest Airlines pilot was arrested and accused of driving under the influence before he boarded a flight he was supposed to fly. Southwest said he's been removed from duty. And the Transportation Department sued Southwest for operating "chronically delayed flights" on some routes. Southwest said it was disappointed in the suit, saying it completed 99 percent of its flights without cancellations. NBC News' Tom Costello reports. The FDA said it will ban Red Dye No. 3, a substance that colors many products but has been shown in studies to cause cancer in rats. Food manufactures will have two years to remove the substance from their products. NBC News' Anne Thompson reports.

The head of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association says controllers around the country are devastated by the crash. He said air traffic control staffing is a major issue around the country. He said training and background checks are rigorous for all who want to be controllers. NBC News' Lester Holt reports. Divers continued to search for victims of the midair collision between an American Eagle jet and an Army Black Hawk helicopter. Officials said both the plane's and the helicopter's black boxes have now been recovered. Investigators are looking at staffing in the control tower before the crash and reports that the helicopter was flying above the usual altitude, which put it on a collision course with the jet. NBC News' Tom Costello reports. More details emerged about those lost in the collision of an American Eagle jet and and Army Black Hawk helicopter. Two of the three soldiers on the helicopter were identified, as were more the passengers and crew members on the plane. They included a civil rights lawyer who was about to start teaching at Howard University, and friends returning from a hunting trip in Kansas. NBC News' Tom Llamas reports. The Trump administration said tariffs would take effect on Saturday on goods from Canada, Mexico and China. Mexico's president said the tariffs would violate trade agreements with the U.S. President Trump insisted that the tariffs would not lead to more inflation for U.S. consumers. NBC News' Garrett Haake reports. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will be in Panama Saturday on his first trip in his new role. Panamanian officials were defiant about maintaining control of the Panama Canal after President Trump said he wants to regain control of the canal. NBC News' Andrea Mitchell reports on what's behind the U.S. move.

Critical talks kicked off in Munich over ending the war in Ukraine, where European officials criticized the U.S. for sending mixed messages. In a new interview with NBC News, Ukraine's President Zelenskyy said there's a "low chance" that Ukraine can survive without ongoing military aid from the U.S. NBC News' Andrea Mitchell reports. As part of his promise to slash the size of the federal bureaucracy, President Trump ordered the firings of "probationary" workers at several federal agencies. The move sparked protests in Washington, while Trump said he will downsize the government, but "run it better." NBC News' Kelly O'Donnell reports. President Trump's move to freeze U.S. foreign aid spending is creating chaos around the world, as the stop-work order has a real-time impact on people's wellbeing and America's reputation. Top officials from the U.S. and Russia will meet in Saudi Arabia this week to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. But Ukrainian officials will not be there, and President Volodymr Zelenskyy says no deal can be reached without their input. NBC News' Richard Engel reports from the Ukrainian city Kherson, where he spoke to people inside a bunker about how they view the negotiations. Nearly 300 FAA employees were terminated this weekend, according to a union that represents some employees there. The latest round of cuts to the federal workforce also includes reductions at the Department of Homeland Security and Centers for Disease Control. NBC News' Kelly O'Donnell reports. In what could be the first Supreme Court case of its kind, the Justice Department is expected to ask the Supreme Court to keep a fired government watchdog off the job while litigation proceeds. One Long Island duck farmer lost his entire flock - nearly 100,000 birds - because of Avian Flu. 3,700 newly hatched ducklings are now his hope for what is likely to be a long road back. Markets endured another down day as the trade war escalates. Among those hardest hit today were certain consumer-based businesses that raised concerns over Americans pulling back their spending. NBC News' Brian Cheung reports. During talks in Saudi Arabia, Ukraine agreed to President Trump's plan for a 30-day ceasefire for the war in Ukraine. Trump said that he will now speak to Russia's president Putin. The U.S. will now resume military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine. NBC News' Keir Simmons reports. Canada canceled its planned surcharges on electricity to the U.S. after President Trump threatened to double his planned tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. Capping a wild day on Wall Street, the president also touted Elon Musk and Tesla on the White House lawn and said he would buy a vehicle. NBC News' Peter Alexander reports. NBC News' Jesse Kirsch reports from Punta Cana, where investigators shared new surveillance video of the missing University of Pittsburgh student last seen on the beach with people she met on the trip. The 20-year-old student went missing early Thursday while on vacation with friends. Officials are interviewing a man believed to be last seen with her on the beach. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy announced changes to air space rules around Washington's DCA airport following a preliminary report from the NTSB on the midair collision over the Potomac that killed 67 people. NBC News' Tom Costello reports. The Department of Education says more than 2,100 civil service workers will lose their jobs. The department says all of its divisions are impacted by the reduction. NBC News' Kelly O'Donnell reports some leases for federal education offices will also be canceled.

California is once again reeling from the aftermath of a fast-moving storm that forced evacuation, rescues and even a rare tornado. NBC News' Steve Patterson reports on the storm system that is now moving east. Nearly 100 protesters arrested after sit-in at Trump Tower in NYC to demand release of Mahmoud Khalil. Khalil became one of the faces of the protests against Israel at Columbia University last spring and now faces possible deportation. NBC News' Laura Jarrett reports. President Trump called the European Union "hostile and abusive" and threatened to slap a 200 percent tariff on European alcohol if the E.U. does not drop its 50 percent levy on American whiskey. While the trade war escalates, NBC News learned the stock market slide has Republicans concerned. NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports. The Oklahoma attorney general charged Robert Morris with five counts of lewd or indecent acts with a child. Morris is the founder of Gateway, one of the largest megachurches in the country. It comes eight months after NBC News investigated the story of Cindy Clemishire, who says Morris began abusing her in 1982, when she was 12. NBC News' Antonia Hylton spoke with Clemishire, who said "most victims think this day will never come." Russian President Putin said he supports the idea of President Trump's ceasefire plan, but there are issues he needs to discuss with the U.S. before he would agree to it. President Trump called Putin's comments "very promising" but incomplete. Ukraine has already accepted Trump's proposal. NBC News' Richard Engel reports. One of the men who authorities say helped take down a suspect who stabbed eleven people at a Walmart told NBC News about how he sprung into action. Marine veteran Matthew Kolakowski says he took off running after the suspect and rammed him with a grocery cart to prevent him from hurting more people. NBC News' Maggie Vespa reports. State police say a man attacked Clinton and Cristen Brink while they were hiking with their 7 and 9-year-old daughters in Devil's Den State Park. In Colorado, former dentist James Craig was found guilty of murder in the death of his wife Angela Craig. Prosecutors said James Craig poisoned his wife's protein shakes. In Virginia, police say a suspect confronted city councilman Lee Vogler, doused him with a flammable liquid and set him on fire. Law enforcement sources say Shane Tamura bought the AR-15 style rifle he used to open fire at a Manhattan skyscraper from a former co-worker for $1400. A divided Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged, despite pressure from President Trump to lower them.
