Veum is no longer working as a private investigator. He has a permanent job as a teacher; enjoying domestic calm with his new girlfriend Karin. "The Knife," a man Varg helped convict of murder, is released from prison, determined to take revenge on those who convicted him.

Varg Veum is summoned by inspector Hamre to a hostage drama on a farm outside Bergen. A married couple have been brutally murdered, and all evidence points to their foster son, 16 year old Jan Egil.

Varg Veum wakes up to a roar that shakes all of Bergen. It turns out to be a weapons depot outside the city that was blown up. Several people lose their lives, including Varg's best friend Even, who is soon named as the bomber. However, Wolf can't get it to work and starts digging into the dark secrets of the arms industry. His investigation takes him to Budapest where he becomes involved in a deadly game in what will be his biggest and most dangerous case ever. Varg soon realizes that he has taken water way over his head when his girlfriend Karin becomes the next victim.

Together, Varg and Karin discover that the dead girl was involved in an operation where young asylum-seeking girls are cynically exploited. Time is running out, and Varg must find the person behind it before more young girls lose their lives.
