Hoe loop je de Marathon des Sables?
De Marathon des Sables is de zwaarste uitdaging die ik ooit aanging. 252 km op 7 dagen door de brandende Sahara. Het was de 25e editie en de organisatoren hadden het extra zwaar gemaakt. De 4e dag was de 'koninginne-etappe'. Het orgelpunt. 84 helse kilometers. De eerste 52 km gingen vrij vlot. De checkpoints volgden zichzelf vrij snel op. Mijn tempo bleef constant. Het ging goed. Maar daar kwam snel verandering in. Na 52 km op checkpoint 4 begon het fout te gaan. Ik was kapot. Had bijna constant gelopen. Mijn voeten voelde ik haast niet meer maar ik kon er ook niet meer op stappen. De pijnstillers werkten niet meer. Er restte nog 32 km. Ik weet er bijna niets meer van. Het werd één grote calvarietocht. Nooit geweten dat 32 km zo lang kon duren. De organisatie had een laserstraal gezet op het laatste checkpoint. Die zag je al van op 30 km in de lucht schijnen. De straal kwam maar niet dichter. Een paar keer dacht ik aan stoppen. De checkpoints lagen precies verder en verder uit elkaar terwijl ze op mijn kaartje net dichter bij elkaar lagen. Nico en Pascal keken alsmaar sipper en sipper op elk checkpoint. Ze zeiden niets, maar dat hoefde ook niet. In hun ogen zag ik hoe het met mij stond. Na 16 uur strompelde ik over de meet. Nico en Pascal zeiden niets. Ik ook niet. De beelden spreken boekdelen.
