Sumo-trainingen zijn bikkelhard. 250 keer squatten (diep door je benen buigen) als opwarming zijn geen uitzondering. Bovendien was de tijd die coach Stephen had beperkt, dus deed hij er alles aan om me klaar te stomen voor het Europese Kampioenschap. We werkten intensief samen. Haast dagelijks reed ik naar Herentals of naar Eindhoven om er te trainen en beetje bij beetje deed ik ervaring op. Stephen moest me enkel nog explosieve agressie bijleren en had daar zo zijn trucje voor. Hij duwde telkens opnieuw zijn duim tussen mijn ribben op een plek die je echt verlamde en dagen erna nog pijn deed .... Hij maakte me bozer en bozer. Toen hij voor de derde keer na elkaar zijn truc toepaste en hij zijn duim diep onder mijn ribbenkast wrong, ging het licht bij me uit. Zijn truc werkte. Hij had mijn agressie opgewekt. Ik kookte vanbinnen. Met al mijn energie stootte ik Stephen recht in zijn gezicht. De psycho coach schrok en vloog 4 meter achteruit uit de ring. Hij herpakte zich snel. "Mooi zo!" zei hij. "Nu kan je vertrekken naar het EK!". Stephen, sorry. Het was zo niet bedoeld. .... maar toch een klein beetje wel ... .
