In deze aflevering reconstrueert Belga Sport de onwaarschijnlijke terugkeer van Freddy Maertens aan de kop van het wielerpeloton in de zomer van 1981, na enkele compleet mislukte seizoenen. Halverwege de jaren zeventig heerst Freddy Maertens als ‘een nieuwe Merckx’ over het peloton. Hij is de koning van de spurt en wint waar en wanneer hij wil. In 1976 onderstreept hij zijn dominantie door op het WK in Italië thuisrijder Francesco Moser te verslaan. Ook de Ronde van Italië van ‘77 lijkt op een triomftocht uit te draaien, maar op het autocircuit in Mugello komt hij in volle spurt zwaar ten val en breekt zijn pols. Van dan af gaat zijn carrière in dalende lijn. Bovendien krijgt hij grote financiële zorgen. Maertens raakt langzaam op de dool en eind 1980 is hij zo goed als renner af. Tot er plots een oude bekende opduikt: Lomme Driessens, de flamboyante ploegleider uit zijn gloriejaren. Hij gelooft nog steeds in het talent van Freddy en wil van hem terug een renner maken.
