The Winter X Games has been an annual extreme sports contest since it first began in 1997. The games are the brainchild of the ESPN family of Networks and is also controlled by the same group. The inaugural Winter X Games were held in summer 1997 in Big Bear Lake, California. Participants compete to win bronze, silver and gold medals, and prize money.
