Sawmill owner Gruber's logging actions mean a drastic increase in the danger of mudflows and avalanches for Ellmau. Mayor Toni Kirchbichler asks Wolfgang for a scientific report on the soil conditions of the area in question. Wolfgang is of course happy to comply with his friend's request. However, the group of students who are to assist him with the soil analysis includes Gruber's only daughter, Katrin, of all people. Her father is fuming because he cannot dissuade his daughter from taking part in the investigation. Katrin finally spontaneously packs her things and moves out. The next While doing ground work in the forest, Katrin has hit an electric cable and is seriously injured. The cable has been secretly buried in the forest floor by none other than her own father.
