'Europe: a beautiful idea?'. Dat was de overkoepelende titel van de reeks internationale conferenties tijdens het Nederlandse EU-voorzitterschap, georganiseerd door het Nexus -instituut, in samenwerking met premier Balkenende's ministerie van Algemene Zaken en het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. Tijdens de conferenties debatteerden zowel 'denkers' als 'beslissers' over de betekenis en politieke relevantie van 'het Europese beschavingsideaal en zijn waarden in de Europese Unie van de 21ste eeuw'. Op de afsluitende conferentie in Rotterdam, ook wel aangeduid als de ‘Europese intellectuele top’, kreeg ook een aantal denkers vanachter het voormalige IJzeren Gordijn het woord.
