Er lijkt iets grondig mis met de Tweede kamerverkiezingen 2006. Een groeiend aantal critici vindt dat de campagne "nergens over gaat". Wat het "feest van de democratie" had moeten zijn, wordt door velen calvinistisch tegemoet getreden, zonder de illusie zich met hun stem uit te spreken over de belangrijke vraagstukken van deze tijd. De politici verweren zich heftig tegen deze kritiek. Premier Balkenende sprak onlangs smalend van "een klagende intelligentsia over het niveau van de politiek, je kunt er de klok op gelijk zetten".
