Tien jaar na de afschaffing van de apartheid is het in Zuid-Afrika met de emancipatie van zwarte mannen somber gesteld. In een maatschappij met slechte economische vooruitzichten en weinig mogelijkheden om te presteren, vindt de gefrustreerde man zijn zelfbevestiging in geweld en onderwerping van vrouwen. Het aantal verkrachtingen is schrikbarend hoog. Bijna de helft van de verkrachters is HIV positief. Sinds kort proberen enkele activisten en een groeiend aantal zwarte mannen dit monsterlijke fenomeen te lijf te gaan. Tegenlicht ging op zoek naar de oorzaken van de verkrachtingsproblematiek en volgde de mannenbeweging tijdens het werk in de townships.
