In the near future, a virtual reality game called Sword Art Online has been released where players control their avatars with their bodies. One day players discover they cannot log out, as the game creator is holding them captive unless they defeat the final boss. However, if they die in the game, they die in real life. Their struggle for survival starts now.

It's been one month since the players' entrapment in the game. Nearly 2000 people have died and the first floor hasn't been cleared yet.

As Kirito learns about the game and the hatred between the races from Leafa, Asuna learns the truth of her role from the Fairy King.

Leafa is making enemies when she leaves her area to team up with Kirito. On their way to neutral territory rules and areas are discussed.
