Season 1

John Cooper is a seasoned Los Angeles cop assigned to train young rookie Ben Sherman. And although Cooper's harsh, tell-it-like-it-is approach often leaves Ben questioning whether he has what it takes to be a cop, he remains on the force.

Season 2 of Southland goes even further inside the lives hardened LAPD veteran John Cooper and his rookie officer partner, Ben Sherman. Detective Lydia Adams must balance her hardened professional life with a more nurturing one at home. Detective "Sal" Salinger oversees the activities of fellow gang detectives, Nate Moretta and Sammy Bryant. While Chickie Brown works to become the first female member of SWAT.

Season 3
Lydia has difficulty adjusting to her mother's return home from Europe with a new boyfriend in tow. The relationship forces Lydia to consider her own life and the fact that remains a single woman. Meanwhile, Ben continues to come into his own as a cop, but he feels increasing pressure to intervene in John's addiction. And Sammy and his wife face a major life change that could have devastating consequences for their marriage.

In the fifth season, Officer John Cooper, a recovering addict, starts to wonder what he has really accomplished after more than 20 years on the force. Officer Sammy Bryant, a detective turned beat cop, faces a whole new set of problems with his estranged wife, and tensions increase with his partner, Officer Ben Sherman, due to Sherman's darker attitude and maturity as a cop.
