Согласно официальным документам, шахматы любили Иван Грозный, Борис Годунов и Пётр I, который активно популяризировал эту древнюю интеллектуальную игру. Документальный сериал познакомит зрителей с малоизвестными фактами о развитии шахмат в России и их влиянии на культуру и общество. Каждая из тридцати 10-минутных серий — это рассказ о легендарных российских шахматистах: Михаиле Чигорине, Михаиле Ботвиннике, Михаиле Тале, Анатолии Карпове и других, а также о знаменитостях прошлого и настоящего, увлекающихся игрой. Поклонниками шахмат являются и сами создатели сериала: писатель и правовед Александр Звягинцев, шахматный историк Владимир Линдер. В качестве ведущего был приглашен известный российский актер Сергей Бурунов, а в саундтреке использована музыка композитора XVIII века Филидора, который не просто любил шахматы, а считался в свое время сильнейшим шахматистом в мире.
