The network has already dubbed the new formations "penal battalions" - by analogy with the famous TV series of the 2000s. Those who are older also remember Vysotsky's song "Penal Battalions". For obvious reasons, there is little documentary evidence of those who fought in real penal companies of the Great Patriotic War. Although the very idea of involving slaves in the fighting is far from new.
