Zoya Neupokoeva is a lawyer's assistant, making great strides in her career. But in her personal life, everything is not so smooth. Her boss and lover Roman has not decided on the next step for many years. Then Zoya makes an offer to Roman herself, but in the end she remains without her beloved man and without a job. And soon her underage nephews disappear without a trace. Neupokoeva seeks help from Denis Martynov, an employee of the investigative committee, a friend of her youth, with whom she had an affair.

The body of the administrator, Ksenia Gordeeva, is found in the hotel. Zoya finds out that it was she who took her nephews to this hotel for a concert by a famous rapper. The investigation's version is suicide, but Zoya doesn't believe it. She is sure that the disappearance of her nephews is somehow connected with Gordeeva's death. In the surveillance footage, Neupokoeva notices that the deceased was afraid of someone.

After the successful completion of Gordeeva's case, Zoya is offered to become an investigator. She has to combine her new job with raising her nephews, who now live with her. Meanwhile, the corpse of a young woman Svetlana Chichagova, who was poisoned with antifreeze, was found. However, according to indirect signs, Neupokoeva understands that Svetlana could not commit suicide. Zoya will have to convince her leadership - Colonel of Justice Kira Pugachev - to open a murder case.

It turns out that in the Chichagovs' house, their daughter's nanny was a certain Arina Ignatova, who used to work in a strip club and was the lover of the deceased's husband. Neupokoeva calls the nanny for questioning as the main suspect. In addition, Zoya learns that Chichagov's first wife Rita also died young. Such a coincidence seems strange to Neupokoeva. Now she needs to find a way to exhume Rita's body.

At the landfill, workers discover the bloody corpse of a man with a terrifying detail - a smiley face carved on the body. Before his death, he was tortured and stabbed multiple times in such a way that he did not die for as long as possible. Upon examination of the body, Neupokoeva determines that the victim was a very wealthy man.

Kositov, a well-known businessman in the city, turns out to be killed, which gives the case greater resonance. Zoya finds out that the businessman was a witness in the case of the murder of a young woman Streletskaya. She was found dead at a campsite nine years ago. The killer also carved a smiley face on Streletskaya's body. Only if Kostov's smiley face was sad, then hers was cheerful. What do these scary marks mean?

After a corporate party, a mutilated girl, Karina Yakushkina, is found on the beach by the lake. She is barely alive and soon falls into a coma. The victim doesn't have a left shoe. The forest next to this beach is called the "Forest of the Murderer", many years ago the body of a strangled girl was found there. Now everyone in the city is sure that the killer has returned. Information has surfaced that Kovalkov was recently released from prison, allegedly having committed a similar crime several years ago. Pugacheva was in charge of his case, but she is sure that Kovalkov is innocent.

Another corpse is found near the ill-fated lake. The next victim of a serial killer is a girl named Inga. She was also strangled, and her left shoe is missing. There is still little evidence, the case is being transferred to a regional specialist. Zoya needs to find the killer before the case is taken away from her...
