The Junior Detective League is after a kidnapper who has dubious intentions. There's more than one life at stake if Conan can't figure out where the captive child is hidden.

Conan and Ran take Kogoro on a crane-watching trip, but the man responsible for the birds' well being is found murdered. The victim's son turns himself in, but Conan suspects the guy is innocent.

Kogoro is hired by a horror novelist to find out with whom his wife is having an affair. Later the same evening, the man is killed in a ritualistic manner and all of the house guests turn out to have motives.

Horror novelist Stefan Van Croven has been pierced through the chest with a wooden stake. Kogoro is convinced that the answer is right under his nose, but he doesn't know that Conan's figured out the trick.
