Liverpool's current unbeaten run of 19 matches against Everton in all competitions is the longest in the fixture's history. However, it took a 96th-minute goal from Divock Origi to win it at Anfield last season before Everton prevented their rivals from returning to the top of the table by drawing the return game in March.
Manchester United and Tottenham were both looking to put indifferent form behind them and kickstart their season, while champions Manchester City made the short journey north to Burnley on Tuesday.
