В МГБ задумывают некую секретную операцию, в соответствии с которой в Петрово появляется Фартовый, который совершает двойное убийство обманутых им накануне воров-картежников прямо на станции. Убитые оказываются известными бандитами из Тамбова. Фартовый навещает своего старого знакомого Гонту, который не рад их встрече, но предлагает бывшему подельнику участие в выгодном деле, угрожая в противном случае рассказать криминальным авторитетам о предательстве, совершенном Фартовым много лет назад еще в лагере. В городской пивной Фартовый обращает на себя внимание мелких воришек, с их помощью находит Чалого и предлагает ему принять участие в новой афере. Несмотря на рекомендации авторитетных воров, Чалый решает самостоятельно навести справки о Фартовом...
