Fabrizio and Roberto Corsaro are dealing with two murders, that of an elderly widow and that of a priest. While for the elderly Concetta Rizzuto, the main suspect in the crime is her young Polish caregiver, who mysteriously disappeared, for Don Sorgi the trail seems to lead to mysterious secret sects. The investigations into the two murders will reserve more than one surprise for our two protagonists.

Fabrizio is sent to Castelferro to write about the murder of the municipal official Nicola Prestipino. The main accused is Fogazza, the mayor of Castelferro, who turns to Roberto for his defense.
