Day 2
Historic Royal Birkdale hosts the second round of the prestigious Women's British Open, now in its 35th year. It is the first time the event has been held at the Southport course since 2005, when South Korea's Jeong Jang claimed her first major title with four sub-70 rounds. Her compatriot Jiyai Shin is looking for her second British Open triumph in three years but faces stiff competition from the rest of the world's top 10 as they look to take the title from reigning champion Catriona Matthew.

The world's top ten are among the competitors vying for the prestigious trophy and 45,000 pounds winner's cheque at Royal Birkdale. Defending champion Catriona Matthew is the highest-ranked Briton: she became the first Scottish woman to win a major title when she sank three late birdies to win the 2009 British Open by three shots. Expect more drama on the Southport course.
