The world's top ten are among the competitors vying for the prestigious trophy and 45,000 pounds winner's cheque at Royal Birkdale. Defending champion Catriona Matthew is the highest-ranked Briton: she became the first Scottish woman to win a major title when she sank three late birdies to win the 2009 British Open by three shots.
