Vandaag balanceert Royal Antwerp FC, de oudste voetbalclub van het land, op de rand van het faillissement. We kunnen het ons dan ook nog nauwelijks voorstellen, maar 17 jaar geleden speelde Antwerp de Europacup 2-finale op het heilige gras van Wembley. Sterker nog: Antwerp is de laatste Belgische club die een Europese finale speelde. Niet omdat het destijds over een lichting buitengewone voetballers beschikte, wel omdat ze met zijn allen aan één zeel trokken, vedetten en waterdragers. De groep was één. En dat kwam ook omdat ze een gemeenschappelijke vijand hadden in de persoon van Eddy Wauters, de flamboyante voorzitter van de club. Wauters stond diametraal tegenover trainer Walter Meeuws, die resoluut voor zijn spelers koos. En omgekeerd: de spelers kozen voor hem. ‘En dat,’ zegt Wauters in een zeldzaam interview, ‘is het principe van goed leiderschap, in de sport en in de politiek: het creëren van een gemeenschappelijke vijand. Dat maakt mensen eendrachtig en sterk.
